You can request to join our two Facebook groups, Cambly Corner and Tech Corner . Both groups are tutors only, and they are great places to meet and discuss your experiences with other tutors. Use Cambly Corner to see what other tutors are up to, share your Cambly experience, get advice, or just say hi! Use Tech Corner to share and discuss technical issues that you're facing with other tutors. For fastest support from the Camby team, however, please submit a detailed request on the Support tab.
Our dress code is casual, but you should maintain a well-groomed and professional appearance while working with students. Your students look up to you as an English tutoring professional, so it’s important to look the part! Fitted t-shirts are fine, but no tank tops, hats, exposed shoulders or cleavage, sunglasses, or clothing with offensive images/language. Ladies - if you must wear a shirt that exposes your shoulders (we know that it can get hot in some regions!), please drape a light and airy shawl over your shoulders so as to keep them covered. Please keep in mind that some Cambly students live in countries that are culturally more conservative than Western countries. Our dress code makes sure that all our students feel comfortable.
Neat Background Requirement
A distracting background can distract from the learning experience. You should be seated at a desk or couch in a quiet location, with a neat background showing in your video feed. This means no tutoring from your bed, and please avoid having other people visible in the video feed behind you. You should also be careful to have your full face directly facing into the camera and not looking off to the side.
All video sessions on Cambly are recorded and securely stored on our servers. Students can review their past sessions with their tutors to help with their studies. Cambly also reserves the right to review and internally share sessions for quality control and training purposes. This helps us maintain a high level of excellence so both our tutors and students have the best experience possible.
We work hard to keep Cambly a safe, positive place to teach and learn English, and we have a zero-tolerance policy for anyone, student or tutor, who misuses the service. Unfortunately, tutors sometimes come in contact with offensive users. Offensive behavior could range anywhere from using offensive language/gestures to nudity. We empower tutors to ban any user from Cambly instantly, and we encourage them to freely do so anytime they feel uncomfortable with a user. We review ban reports so, if it turns out to be a misunderstanding, we'll let the student back onto the platform. To ban a user, just press the red "Ban" button on the chat screen. You can also ban the user from the student page, which can be found in your History tab. You can ban students who send offensive messages by clicking on the wheel icon from the message window and selecting "Report" and then "Offensive". We also have automated systems that can ban potentially offensive users before they even contact a tutor. We're continually researching ways to improve our automatic safeguards.
You can also hit the "Report" button in the chat window to report students with technical problems, lack of participation, repeated calling, and other more minor problems. If we get more than 2 reports for a student, we'll clear the student's free trial so that he/she doesn't waste any more tutors' time. You can also report students from their student pages and from the message window.
Most students subscribe to a monthly plan where they have a daily allowance of talk time. The packages come in 15, 30, 60, and 120 minutes daily limits. A student can choose to have daily sessions, sessions 5x a week, 3x a week or 1x a week. The student's daily minutes are refreshed each day at 3 AM in the student's local time. Cambly plans are very cost-effective, and we are proud to offer one of the most convenient and affordable services to practice English with a native speaker in the market. Tutors can see the price of our subscriptions by opening this link (when you're not logged in to your tutor account, or are using an Incognito window).
No Smoking, Drinking Alcohol, Eating, or Chewing Gum
Please refrain from smoking or drinking alcoholic beverages while tutoring. Also please refrain from eating or chewing gum as that can interfere with your speech. Of course, non-alcoholic drinks are fine, as they can be helpful when you've been talking for many hours!
Talking about Religion, Politics, or Other Controversial Subjects
Some tutor and student relationships are open and respectful enough where they are able to have fulfilling conversations about religion, politics, or other controversial topics while practicing English. However, as a general rule, these topics should be handled with an extremely high level of sensitivity. If you feel that you or the student cannot discuss these topics without negativity or cause for possible offense, please immediately desist and move to another topic.
Responding to Romantic Interest
Cambly tutors work closely with students on a frequent basis, which often leads to deep friendships. However, Cambly's policy is that tutors discourage and avoid romantic interest. If you or your student develop a romantic interest on Cambly, please report it to us via the Support tab above. We'll block you from the student, but he or she will still be able to work with other tutors. Reportable offenses include: offers of gifts or money, romantic/sexual messages or comments, and asking for personal contact information. Romantic overtures may be interpreted differently in different cultures and can lead to discomforting and unexpected behavior. This policy helps keep both tutors and students safe.
Working with the Cambly Team
To ensure Cambly runs smoothly, a Cambly team member may initiate communication with you via email or video chat on the Cambly platform. Please ensure you have an updated email address on your account, and respond to all emails in a reasonably prompt manner.
Your profile video, along with your profile, is publicly available online. Therefore, be sure to only include information you are comfortable sharing online. Additionally, Cambly records every session and makes it available to the student for review, which many students have found to be an essential part of the learning process. To help promote your personal brand inside of Cambly and attract new students, we prompt students with the option to share their video recordings with friends and/or on social media. If you'd like, you can turn this feature off from inside your profile page in your tutor account. However, as students have access to their Cambly videos regardless, it's possible that some may choose to share their tutoring video(s) with friends or online. To further maintain your privacy, you also have the option to use a tutoring name that is different from your real name. If you'd like to do so, you can update your tutor Display Name any time from inside your Tutor Account.
Because of the amount of time our tutors spend talking to students, tutors are often the first to know when a student is particularly happy or unhappy with a particular aspect of Cambly. If students tell you about any problem, question, or feedback they have for Cambly, please pass it onto us by submitting a request! We'll reach out to them and help deliver the excellent customer service that will get them coming back to Cambly day after day.
Students may ask for your personal contact information (Facebook, Skype, Email, Whatsapp, Instagram, WeChat etc.), but it is our policy that tutors decline from providing any external contact information to students. This protects your privacy and ensures you get paid for talking to students. You can politely respond that it’s against Cambly’s policy to give out those personal details. You can remind them that Cambly's messaging system should work well for your purposes and theirs.
Tutors and students often develop such strong bonds that sometimes they consider meeting in person. We advise tutors to exercise their best judgment while arranging in-person meetings. Please note that Cambly does not perform background checks on students. Meeting a student offline may hold a similar risk to meeting any person offline whom you've met on the internet.
